Friends in the dark

The candle flickers in the darkness.

Light shudders in anticipation.

The shadows celebrate their new friends

As they teach furthur toward the door.

The wind calls out to old friends

As a child’s toys are lost in darkness.

The trees reach for the windows and door

Knowing what is to come, and anticipating.

Footsteps are heard from the other side of the door.

The nervous child sees his toys become something other than his friends

And cries as he sees them dance in anticipation.

An abandoned child left to the shadows in the darkness.

Everyone is left waiting. The anticipation

Thickens. The footsteps come closer to the door

Until it swings open. Light shines through the darkness

To reveal mom holding a bear. Hello old friend.

This was sort of my attempt to do some more poetry. I have been reading some of my old poems and I was really wanting to write again, so this is what came out. It turned into a bit of a mini-sestina. 4 lines instead of 6. Critiques are always welcome! This was not the ending I initially intended, but it’s the one that came out. Not sure how I feel about it. I may revise it to be different. Writing is only half the battle while revision is the rest of it.
